1.1 What is WELPS?
WEPLS is a voluntary Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme initiated by SPAN to register and label water efficient products according to the guidelines set by SPAN.
WEPLS label serves to inform consumers of the product’s water efficiency rating and the consumers will be able to take these factors into accounts when making their purchasing decision.

1.2 Why WELPS?
WEPLS is introduced for the following purposes:

  • to raise awareness of the public on the availability of water efficient products
  • to encourage a healthy water consuming habit among consumers
  • to promote a green life style by using water efficient products
  • to encourage the suppliers in the development and marketing of water efficient products in Malaysia
  • to motivate the introduction of cost-effective and water efficient technologies in Malaysia

1.3 What are the WEPLS products?
Five (5) types of products are covered under WEPLS, namely water taps which include basin tap, sink tap, shower tap and ablution tap, water closet, urinal equipment, shower heads and clothes washing machine.

1.4 How a product is rated?
The water efficiency product is rated according to its water consumption based on the three (3) star rating system. One star indicates that the product is a water efficient product whereas two stars indicate that the product is highly water efficient and three stars indicate that the product is the most water efficient as compared to other similar products in the market. The following tables are used to determine the water efficiency rating of a product.

Table 1: Conversion of water consumption to water efficiency rating for basin taps and mixers

Water Consumption
nominal flow rates (ƒ) (l/min)

Water Efficiency Grade

Rating

Symbol on Label

 6.0 < ƒ ≤ 8.0

 Efficient

 1

 4.0 < ƒ ≤ 6.0

 Highly Efficient

 2

 1.5 < ƒ ≤ 4.0

 Most Efficient

 3

If tap equipment has an effective automatic shut-off device, its water efficiency rating is increased to the next higher rating.

1.5 How does WEPLS Label Look Like?

WEPLS label is available in two versions, i.e. full and simplified. The full version, size 15.5 cm x 9.5 cm is to be affixed on the product packing. The simplified versions, size 10 cm x 6 cm and 5 cm x 2.5 cm are to be affixed or hanged on the products.

Full version
Size 15.5cm x 9.5cm

Simplified version
Size 10.0cm x 6.0cm

Simplified version
Size 5.0cm x 2.5cm

The WEPLS label displays the following keys information:

  • star rating indicating its water efficiency
  • WEPLS registration number
  • product information such as brand, model and water consumption.
